Have you been Scrooged?
I always loved the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. This beloved story has so much meaning hidden in it. Perhaps now is a good time to look at parts of you that have a tendency to be a little self-centered and greedy.
He shuns the poor. Do you do this as you see street people asking for some money? Or being annoyed at them on the street corners?
Scrooge points out that Marley was a good man of business, but Marley explains that mankind was his business. Contemplate this statement.
He then tells Scrooge he will be visited by 3 Ghosts.
We all have ghosts that haunt us, don’t we?
The first ghost of Christmas past. This is where we get to look at our own past, our regrets, miscommunications, mistakes, where we withheld love and forgiveness to ourself or others. (The Ghost of Christmas Past revisits some of the main events in Scrooge’s life to date, including his unhappy childhood, his happy apprenticeship to Mr. Fezziwig who cared for his employees, and the end of his engagement to a pretty young woman due to growing love of money)
The second ghost of Christmas present. This is where he got to witness others. They visit miners, and then watch Bob Cratchitt’s happy, although small, Christmas celebration. The spirit tells Scrooge that Tim will die if circumstances don’t change.
Big part of the story, if we don’t change what are the outcomes we are willing to live with?
The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows him what he will leave behind after he is gone. Isn’t that the way it is at times, it is when we lose things, people, places we awaken to the awareness of how much they meant to us. Our appreciation becomes present to us.
Scrooge awakens on Christmas morning, a new man intent on doing good and celebrating the season with all of those around him. He had a change of heart!!!!!
This is all of our stories of being Scrooged, we are self-centered, unaware of the suffering of others. When we decide to be different, open our hearts back up, to bless each other and the world we live in, we are in the process of creating a new humanity!!!
May your holiday be filled with this deep awareness.
much love,
Debra
