The world is suffering, what can I do?
The place to improve the world is first in
one’s own heart and head and hands,
and then work outward from there.
—Robert M. Pirsig
As I see from this quote, to change the world we see outside of ourselves, the first action comes from within. Can I or am I even willing to access my heart? It took me a long time to be willing to do this. My heart was on “lock-down”. Yes, I am grateful that my Essence/Soul did not quit knocking on that door. It whispered through the years, “I am here” perhaps even lifetimes, who knows.
As I spent more time in my heart and using the HeartMath tools/system to do so, it opened more and more each day. It began to crack open. I will admit, it physically hurt often as I did this practice. “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in”…Leonard Cohen.
The light was coming in. What was blocking it was all the hurts I experienced as a child. Ones I could not express to my parents, brothers, sister, friends, teachers, as you can see the list can go on. We store them in our hearts, called samscaras. Then the Universe begins to prompt us to change.
Improve my mind was the other thing. I had let the negativity bias of the brain around survival to take hold. I was young. Then as I grew older and wiser, I saw the habit/addiction to this thought pattern. It was/is a past pattern that was programmed into my subconscious mind.
I am awakening…
There is an old Cherokee tale …the young Grandson sitting by the fire with his Grandfather talking. The Grandfather vulnerably shared with the grandson “there are two wolves in my head, one is filled with anger, resentment, hatred, war, judgments and fear. The other one is filled with love, patience, willingness, compassion, kindness, generosity, and peace. They are at war. The Grandson asked “which one will win Grandfather”?. The Grandfather replied “the one I feed”!.
Something we all face within ourselves, isn’t it?
We have choice.
